A big thanks to all the supporters, as I did not only reach the 200 km in a month goal, but also reach the target of the crowdfunding campaign! Join the KMSK Swiss Challenge 2020 to contribute!

08-06-2020 The goal is in sight Due to unforeseen circumstances I have not been able to update the website lately. Today a very brief update and a list of the latest runs, which have been completed in the Netherlands. With only 6,61 km and 2 days to go, it is as good as certain that the 200 km will be achieved within one month.

I would like to dedicate these runs, particularly the 36+ km, to all of those who leave us too early, but stay forever in our hearts.

There is also reason to celebrate: we have reached the crowdfunding goal of CHF 500,-! A big thanks to all the supporters! Feel free to contribute via Crowdify, or join the KMSK Swiss Challenge 2020 as an active participant!

27-05-2020 Getting closer, getting tired As you may have noticed, I am using the blog to keep you posted on my progress towards the 200 km in a month challenge, which is my contribution to the KMSK Swiss Challenge 2020, in support of families affected by rare diseases. Today I was supposed to do some intervals at the Oerlikon athletics track. After a decent first 5 km, the sprints were too much for my tired legs. With my mind on the coming week, it was better to take it ‘easy’ and leave the sprinting for another day. In the end it turned out to be a nice early evening 13,68 km run. After 125 km and still two weeks to go, the overall tiredness becomes noticeable. However, as long as there is no muscle pain I will just keep going, albeit at a slower pace. 75 km in 14 days definitely seems doable :).

Worth to mention: we have almost reached the crowdfunding goal of CHF 500,-! A big thanks to all the supporters! Feel free to contribute via Crowdify, or join the KMSK Swiss Challenge 2020 as an active participant!

Goal: 200 km — Completed: 125,26 km
Total elevation gain: 1975 m
Days to go: 14 — Distance to go: 74,74 km

25-05-2020 A short one A short update about a short recovery run through the neighbourhood: 6,02 km almost flat (with little sweat). It went surprisingly well after yesterday’s 30 kilometers.

Worth to mention: we have almost reached the crowdfunding goal of CHF 500,-! Feel free to contribute via Crowdify, or join the KMSK Swiss Challenge 2020 as an active participant!

Goal: 200 km — Completed: 111,58 km

24-05-2020 Halfway After a busy work week with little time for running (but plenty time to recover), it was time for a challenge: Make up for the missed kilometers of last week and get back on track towards my personal 200 km in a month challenge as part of the KMSK Swiss Challenge 2020 of the Forderverein for Kinder mit Seltenen Krankheiten. With perfect weather conditions I left for at least 25 km, which turned out to be over 30. With 17 days to go and the overall counter past 105 km, everything is going according to plan.

Goal: 200 km — Completed: 105,56 km
Total elevation gain: 1797 m

21-05-2020 Sunny afternoon A good day to make some kilometers for the KMSK, with a few rounds in Irchelpark followed by a short run through the Zurichberg forest to escape from the heat. The first 75 km have been completed (also covering the first 1000 height meters). Every day, it starts to feel more feasible to cross the 200 km goal within the first 4 weeks. That would give room for some additional kilometers at the end.

Goal: 200 km — Completed: 75,50 km
Total elevation gain: 1154 m
Days to go: 20 — Distance to go: 124,50 km

19-05-2020 Another short one An easygoing evening run through sunny Irchelpark. Muscles still feel a bit tired after Sunday’s half marathon, but everything is still moving as it should.

Goal: 200 km — Completed: 62,59 km
Total elevation gain: 985 m

17-05-2020 The first week The first 7 days have passed and I have completed the first quarter on my way towards the 200 km. Today’s 20+ km run proved a bit more challenging than usual. It was kind of a relief to find the Lorenchopf lookout tower on top of Adlisberg closed and barricaded, so there was a good excuse to skip the traditional climb to the viewpoint. Looking forward to what the coming 3 weeks will bring.
Feel free to contribute via Crowdify, or join the KMSK Swiss Challenge 2020 as an active participant!

Goal: 200 km — Completed: 56,73 km

14-05-2020 An evening on the track The kilometers slowly start adding up and after an intensive training on the track another 12 kilometers can be added to the count. Also, a big thanks for the first supporters who contributed via Crowdify! For those of you who wanted to make me sweat, rest assured: today I surely did. The height meters will be left for the weekend.

11-05-2020 First kilometers Today, the KMSK Swiss Challenge 2020 has officially commenced. With an easy-going kick-off run on the Oerlikon athletics track, my first 5,56 km have been completed. For the moment, the biggest challenge will be not to exaggerate too much, as the month is still young.

We are in the process of starting a crowdfunding project in support of this run. Check the blog to stay informed. Any additional support for KMSK is greatly appreciated.

Of course you can also join the KMSK Swiss Challenge 2020 as an active participant!

Goal: 200 km; Completed: 5,56 km; Days to go: 30; Distance to go: 194,44 km.

Ready to go!

06-05-2020 KMSK Swiss Challenge 2020 As part of the AcceleRare initiative, a Swiss public-private network to advance drug discovery for rare diseases, I have become involved with the Forderverein fur Kinder mit Seltenen Krankheiten (KMSK). This foundation supports children and families that are affected by rare diseases by organizing activities and events. These heartwarming events bring families together and offer a welcome distraction from the daily impact of living with a rare disease.

Over the last years, I have supported KMSK by volunteering as a photographer for their events. Moreover, every year I donate part of the revenue from rare diseases-related projects that I support with WiWright. This year on the 9th of May, we were planning to participate with a KMSK team to the SOLA Stafette (a relay run organized by the Akademische Sportverband Zurich) to raise money for KMSK. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 crisis led to the cancellation of the race.

As an alternative, KMSK has organized the KMSK Swiss Challenge 2020, a COVID-19 compatible ‘virtual’ race where each runner participates individually. Between 11th of May and 18th October 2020, there will be 3 one-month stages during which I will try to run at least 200km each. I’m still exploring sponsorship opportunities through which people can support my efforts and thereby the KMSK. Via this blog, I will share my progress. Of course, feel encouraged to join the KMSK Swiss Challenge 2020 by registering and become active yourself (hiking, biking, running, or even golfing).
